Manchester Airport officially opened on 25 June 1938, covering an area of 1400 acres with flights to 199 destination. During the Second World War it was used as a base for the Royal Air Force. It has been referred to as Manchester Ringway International Airport. The airport is owned and managed by the Manchester Airports Group. Manchester Airport has 3 passenger terminals and also has a separate goods terminal, it is the only airport in the UK (other than London Heathrow Airport) to operate two runways.
In 2017 Manchester Airport handled a record 27.8 million passengers; Manchester Airport is currently in the process of a major expansion plan, which will double the size of terminal 2 costing 1 billion pounds, which is due to be completed in 2024.
